People: Typical Asians
Assumption
“Chinese all look like typical Asians.”
Reality
Shocked?? I was shocked as well. FYI,there are 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities in China and some of them are genetically Turkish, Central Asians, or even Russians. So, don’t be too surprised if you meet with a look-like-foreigner who states himself/herself as a Chinese.
FOOD: Eat Cockroach & Snake
Assumption
"The Chinese eat everything with four legs, except tables, and everything that flies, except airplanes.”
Every time I talk to my friends and family back at home, they always ask me stupid questions like these. "What did you eat for Lunch? Cockroach, Dog or Snake? Do Chinese eat anything else than noodles and Rice?"

COMMUNISM: Don't have any rights
Assumption
Yes China is a Communist country. People imagine they would see policemen on every corner carrying AK-47s.
Reality
The constitution includes many civil rights: free speech, press, worship, the right to trial, and the right to own private property. China has gone from being a country that opposed capitalism to one that embraces property rights. profits and free market competition.
Poor Country
Assumption
Many people from western countries still think China is very poor and people are still dying out of hunger and famine.
Reality
China is the 2nd largest world economy and aims to be first largest economy by 2020.
KUNGFU: All Chinese people are Kungfu Masters
Assumption
People imagine learning Kungfu and flying like a Ninja and expect all the Chinese doing it as their daily life. Thanks to Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee Movies.
Reality
In reality Chinese are glued to their cell phones most of the time.
Fashion: old style
Assumption
”Foreigners think all the Chinese wear typical traditional dress.Fashion style in China is still as old as 30 years ago."
Reality
Most of the Chinese wear modern dress and are comfortable with it.
Movies & Music
Assumption
Chinese people just preferred to watch kung fu movies and listen to erhu music.
Reality
You would be blown away by how much American media Chinese people consume!
Transportation: No automation
Expectation
People are still riding bikes everywhere because automatic vehicles are still unavailable
Reality

NO SOCIAL MEDIA:
Assumption
People don't use social media and all the news websites would be definitely not allowed in China.
Reality
Most of the news sources, including BBC and CNN, are accessible and You can use VPN to access blocked websites in China.
